The intrauterine device (IUD) is an effective contraceptive for many women. The IUD is an excellent choice for women or countries when hormone releasing contraceptives are not preferred or available. 

Insertion of the IUD can take place any  time during the menstrual cycle so long as the woman isn't currently pregnant. In addition, a proper examination by a medical professional of the uterus is needed to determine proper positioning of the IUD. IUD devices are used by 20% of all Universal Medical Products associated family planning  NGOs.
